First Assist Program

MENTAL HEALTH

Being ready for the next level means more than what happens on the ice.

The OJHL First Assist Program, supported by the Legacy Foundation of Canada, is built to help our players develop the tools, awareness, and support systems needed to handle the pressures of hockey, life, and everything that comes with both.

Because strength isn’t just physical.
And toughness isn’t silence.

This program provides players with real conversations, practical resources, and ongoing support focused on mental wellness, resilience, and personal growth — helping them build habits and skills they can carry long after the season ends.

SUPPORT THAT SHOWS UP

First Assist is designed to support players on a team-by-team and player-by-player basis, while also giving parents, billets, and support networks the tools to better understand and recognize mental wellness challenges.

The program focuses on:

  • Mental wellness and positive youth development
  • Resilience and responding to adversity
  • Discussion-based learning and life skill development
  • Understanding challenges commonly faced by young athletes
  • Hockey-specific mental health awareness
  • The connection between physical and mental health

Because in this league, asking for support is part of getting stronger.

BUILT FOR REAL LIFE

The First Assist Program is available through both in-person and online sessions, giving players access to support wherever they are throughout the season.

Resources include:

  • Life skills development materials
  • Educational booklets and handouts
  • Follow-up support processes
  • SafeTalk training
  • 24-hour help line access
  • Counselling services
  • Program posters, player cards, website tools, and app-based resources

MORE THAN A PROGRAM

Inside the OJHL, we believe development means preparing players for life, not just hockey.

We push each other to compete harder, respond better, and support the people beside us when it matters most. That’s what teams do. That’s what leaders do.
